“No
one has greater love than to give up one’s life for one’s friends.”
John
15:13
I have heard or read this a thousand times over.
It just seems different to gaze upon it at the start of Holy Week. To think that by the end of the week, we will
be grieving Jesus’ death, well, because we have to. We have to go through Good Friday to get to
Resurrection Sunday.
So
as we look upon Jesus’ teaching about self-sacrifice in light of what he is
about to do, and before we even think about how we are to respond, maybe we
should just sit with it for a little while.
He says, “This is what love is” and while it is one thing to just talk
about it, he goes further and says, “Now let me show you.” And indeed, there
has never been a demonstration more powerful than that.
Thanks
be to God for the words, for the words that were shown and for the Word made
flesh.
Peace,
B
